Play: JOY!

Synopsis

JOY!: A Period Dramedy (Approx. 110 minutes, Cast of 6)

1965. Small town, USA. A young woman named Joy is coming of age in a world that’s determined to silence her voice. JOY! is a poignant and powerful period drama, inspired by true events of a young woman under the shadow of her patriarchal father’s iron will and a society that limits her dreams. As she navigates insidious family betrayals, Joy must find her own voice, purpose, and fight for the one she loves.

With flashes of humor, raw confrontation, and a beautiful love story, JOY! explores what it means to find your voice and to claim a future beyond the walls others build for you. At its heart, it is a story of courage and love strong enough to survive war, prejudice, and family bonds stretched to the breaking point.

Rooted in history, the play captures the turbulence of the Vietnam War, the rise of the N.O.W. women’s movement, and the cultural shockwaves of The Feminine Mystique and the Beatles. It delves into significant dramatic elements, exploring profound themes of female agency, complexities of family roles, resilience in the face of adversity, and the power of connection.

Staged in the family farmhouse and the surrounding woods, the play features six unforgettable characters: a domineering patriarch, his three daughters on the cusp of change, a young veteran-turned-minister, and a watchful church elder - all caught in a storm of love, loyalty, and defiance.

This is not just Joy’s struggle — it is a generational reckoning with  tradition, faith, and the power of women rising to claim their rightful place in a changing world.
