Three Phenomenal Teachings

Mind is the Builder. Life is the Miracle. But what if the Builder is tired, confused, or stuck in a cycle of struggle?

I have spent years as a spiritual seeker and found myself caught between separate teachings. Through much reflection and practice, I have come to realize that Cayce, ACIM, and the Bible, are all pointing toward the same destination: the restoration of our inner awareness.

I wrote this book to relate my experience of these teachings that tell us to let go of the ego’s false thinking and wake up to the Spirit.

Whether you are a follower of Cayce, a student of the Course, or a seeker of Biblical truth, you will find this book to be a practical and succinct guide to all three.

Your mind is the tool. Your life is the construction site. Your miracle is waiting.

The Untold Story of Cayce & the ACIM Scribes

Did you know that the the book, A Course in Miracles shares a deep philosophical connection with Edgar Cayce’s Association for Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach?

The very first version of A Course in Miracles (ACIM; the Course) was given to Edgar Cayce’s Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) in Virginia Beach a full three years before it was officially copyrighted and published. This edition was only recently discovered in the year 2000.

Here’s how it happened: In the summer of 1965, just months before the scribing of A Course in Miracles began, Dr. Helen Schucman was experiencing a series of intense psychic visions that were deeply unsettling. Her colleague, Dr. Bill Thereford, tried to help her understand these phenomena by encouraging her to read about Edgar Cayce.

Despite Helen’s initial resistance as a staunch atheist and psychologist, they traveled together to Edgar Cayce's Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) in Virginia Beach. There they met Hugh Lynn Cayce, Edgar Cayce’s son. Hugh Lynn became a supportive friend and mentor to them during the early years of the ACIM scribing. Helen and Bill gave Hugh Lynn the first typed, unpublished copy of ACIM in 1972 for safekeeping. This is sometimes called the Urtext, the Original Edition, or the Hugh Lynn Cayce version of ACIM.

Shortly afterward, Helen and Bill formed the Foundation for Inner Peace and edited the notes for ACIM into a more abstract, poetic version, intended for a global audience. They published this edited edition in 1976. This is referred to as the standard Blue Book edition of ACIM.

When the standard edition was published, approximately 45,000 words had been edited out. The parts that were eliminated were deemed private to situations in the lives of Helen and Bill. These are referred to as the “Cameos,” and there are 33 of them. These are interesting to study, because many of us deal with these same issues in our own lives. You won’t see these in the standard Blue Book of ACIM. However, they can be found summarized in this book, 50 Ways to Create Miracles in Life.

Many people feel that ACIM is extremely difficult to comprehend and use in everyday life. This book, 50 Ways to Create Miracles in Life is a primer for the Edgar Cayce Readings and A Course in Miracles in that it compares the 50 Miracle Principles at the beginning of the Course. The 50 Miracle Principles are basically the “syllabus” for ACIM and help define the concepts that ACIM discuss in depth. These principles continually circle back to the same core truths, applying them to different areas of life. They are the “branches” that take us back to the “root” of the tree of life. The connection with Biblical verses are also given, and are surprisingly matched to these principles.

50 Ways to Create Miracles in Life is a succinct and practical guide for all three spiritual teachings. This book is currently being used in a study group at Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E. on the comparative study of the Edgar Cayce Readings, A Course in Miracles, and the core truths of Bible. Click on the link above if you are interested in starting a study group, or join us at Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. on Thursdays from 2-3pm in the Copeland Dining Room for lively discussion on Cayce and his connection to the A Course in Miracles teachings. We are studying the 50 Miracle Principles at the beginning of ACIM, one principle a week, over the next year.

Cayce and the Miracle Principles of ACIM

Cayce & Miracle Principle #1

Cayce & Miracle Principle #1

Cayce & Miracle Principle #1

Miracle Principle #1 of ACIM states: There is no order of difficulty in miracles. One is not harder or bigger than another. They are all the same. All expressions of love are maximal.

Cayce Connection: Reading 3452-1, says to "Get the meaning of universal love - not attempting to make it personal, but universal, for God is love."

This reading provides a practical bridge to Miracle Principle #1. Cayce often distinguished between personal love, which is conditional and comes in degrees, to universal love, which is unconditional and God-like.

His teaching is to think of God's love like the white light entering a prism. We see the different colors (small acts, big acts), but the Source is the same - maximal love, universal love, God love.

Cayce's own maximal love was the ability to become a channel. When we are a channel, we aren't creating the love ourselves; we are letting the infinite flow through us. If the flow is from the infinite, the love is always maximal.

Cayce & Miracle Principle #2

Miracle Principle #2 of ACIM states: Miracles as such do not matter. The only thing that matters is their Source, Which is far beyond human evaluation.

Edgar Cayce’s philosophy is almost an exact match for this principle. One of his most famous recurring phrases was: “Spirit is the Life, Mind is the Builder, the Physical is the Result.”

Cayce addressed this in the 262 readings, explaining that spirit is the source of life, the mind shapes or builds experience, and the physical world reflects the result.

Cayce cautioned people who came to him for physical cures. He would tell them that if they didn’t change their purpose and relationship with the Divine, the physical healing likely would not last.

The leaves (the physical result) are temporary. If the roots (the connection to the Source) are healthy, the leaves will be healthy and grow naturally. To obsess over leaves while ignoring the roots is a misunderstanding of how the universe works.

Cayce & Miracle Principle #3

Cayce & Miracle Principle #3

Miracle Principle #3 of ACIM states: Miracles occur naturally as expressions of love. The real miracle is the love that inspires them. In this sense, everything that comes from love is a miracle.

Cayce taught in the 262 readings that the soul’s true nature is already connected to the creative forces of the universe. When individuals allow divine love to flow through them, miraculous experiences become a natural expression of spiritual law. “For, know that the soul's natural state is in accord with the Creative Forces.”

Cayce spoke about how the miraculous is actually the natural law of the soul, while the ordinary world of struggle is the deviation. He said, “Like begets like.” If we are in tune with the Infinite, the miraculous is simply how the universe functions.

Cayce’s most consistent advice was, “Be a channel of blessing.” He didn’t tell people to go out and perform big acts. He told them that if they held the right spirit (Love), the blessing would flow through them naturally to whoever needed it.
